Common Dota 2 Beginner Mistakes
Everyone makes the same mistakes at the start of Dota 2. The good news is that they are easy to fix once you can name them. This guide lists the ten habits that cost new players the most games, each with a fix you can try in your next match.
If you have not picked a hero yet, begin with best Dota 2 heroes for beginners.
The 10 most common beginner mistakes
1. Ignoring the minimap
Why it hurts: Most early deaths are ganks you could have seen: an enemy hero disappears from your lane and shows up behind you.
The fix: Glance at the minimap every few seconds. When an enemy leaves their lane, back off or tell your team. Buy a ward if you are a support.
2. Missing last hits and denies
Why it hurts: Gold and experience from creeps are the biggest source of income in the early game, and missing them leaves you behind even if you never die.
The fix: Practise on its own: how to last hit and deny.
3. Chasing kills into the dark
Why it hurts: Following a low-health hero into fog or under their tower often ends with you dead and them alive.
The fix: Ask yourself before every chase: do I have vision, do I have an escape, and does the target have friends nearby? If any answer is no, stop.
4. Fighting alone
Why it hurts: Dota is a team game. A hero that walks into five enemies on their own gives the other team gold and experience.
The fix: Fight when your teammates are near. If nobody is around, farm or push a lane and wait for a fight you can join.
5. Buying items without a plan
Why it hurts: A random item list wastes gold, and the shop’s suggestions are not tuned to your hero or lane.
The fix: Open your hero’s page for the most-bought items by phase, and read Dota 2 items for beginners for the essentials.
6. Taking the carry’s farm as a support
Why it hurts: Supports are meant to earn less gold. Last-hitting creeps in the carry’s lane slows down the player the team is counting on.
The fix: If you are a support, let your carry take the last hits and use your gold for wards and utility. See positions and roles.
7. Ignoring objectives
Why it hurts: Kills do not win games; towers, Roshan and barracks do. Teams that win a fight and walk away often waste it.
The fix: After a won fight, take a tower or Roshan before the enemies are back. Even a single tower gives gold to the whole team.
8. Playing too many different heroes
Why it hurts: Every new hero resets what you have learned about timings, items and abilities.
The fix: Pick two or three heroes from the beginner list and stay with them for a few weeks.
9. Not checking what the enemy can do
Why it hurts: Walking into an enemy stun or silence you did not know about loses you the fight before it starts.
The fix: Hover over each enemy hero at the start and read their abilities. Every hero page lists abilities and talents.
10. Tilting
Why it hurts: Arguing, blaming teammates and playing angry lowers your play and everyone else’s. Games are won from behind more often than people expect.
The fix: Mute anyone who is toxic, take a break after two losses in a row and focus on one thing to improve per game.
Work on one thing per game
You cannot fix ten habits at once. Pick one for each game, such as “look at the minimap every five seconds” or “do not chase without vision”, and judge the game by that goal rather than by the result. After a few games the habit sticks and you can pick the next.
Not sure which mistake costs you the most? Watch the replay of your last loss and note how you died. If you died alone to a hero you did not see, that is mistakes 1 and 4.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the biggest mistake new Dota 2 players make?
- Not watching the minimap and dying to ganks is the most common, followed by missing last hits and fighting without teammates.
- How do I stop dying so much in Dota 2?
- Check the minimap often, stay near your team, keep an escape ready and do not chase heroes into fog or under their tower.
- Should a beginner mute chat?
