Best Dota 2 Heroes for Beginners
Dota 2 has 127 heroes, and nobody learns them all at once. The fastest way to improve as a new player is to pick a few forgiving heroes, play them again and again, and learn the game’s rules on top of simple abilities. This guide picks ten heroes that are easy to learn, one or more for every role, and backs each choice with real win rates from Herald to Crusader games in patch 7.41f.
Short on time? Start with Wraith King, Crystal Maiden or Axe. Not sure what kind of hero you like? Try the hero picker: three questions, six suggestions.
What makes a hero easy to learn?
A beginner-friendly hero usually has most of these traits:
- A short, clear kit. A stun, a damage spell and a passive you can use without thinking about combos or timings.
- Forgiving. Plenty of health, a way to escape, or an ability that lets you survive a mistake. Fragile heroes punish every wrong step.
- One unit to control. Heroes that command illusions, clones or summons need fast hands and a lot of attention.
- A plan that fits in one sentence. “Farm, then fight” or “stun the target for my team” is enough.
Valve rates every hero’s complexity from 1 to 3 in the game files. 55 heroes carry the lowest rating (“Simple”). Our data shows they are not weak: at Herald to Crusader, they win 50.7% of their games against 49.1% for the other heroes. Simple does not mean bad; at low ranks it often means better, because mistakes cost less.
The 10 easiest heroes to start with
One list for every role. The win rate on each card is from Herald to Crusader games, which is where most new players start. Tier badges show how each hero stands across all ranks in patch 7.41f.
- Carry · Pos 1Melee
Wraith King stuns with Wraithfire Blast, hits harder with Mortal Strike and, thanks to Reincarnation, comes back to life after dying once. That safety net is why he forgives so many mistakes.
56.0% win rate at Herald to Crusader (109.7K games) · Items & abilities
- Carry · Pos 1Melee
A straightforward farmer. Blade Fury makes you immune to spells while spinning, Healing Ward keeps you topped up, and Omnislash finishes fights. Easy to play, hard to kill early.
51.8% win rate at Herald to Crusader (146.5K games) · Items & abilities
- Carry · Pos 1Melee
Storm Hammer stuns, Great Cleave hits groups, Warcry makes you sturdier and faster and God’s Strength turns you into a damage machine. One button per fight, no hidden tricks.
51.0% win rate at Herald to Crusader (80.7K games) · Items & abilities
- Mid or offlane · Pos 2/3Melee
Tanky, with a stun in Dragon Tail and Fireball and Breathe Fire to poke from range. Elder Dragon Form makes you stronger when it matters. A good way to learn the middle lane.
52.9% win rate at Herald to Crusader (86.3K games) · Items & abilities
- Offlane · Pos 3Melee
Berserker’s Call forces enemies to attack you, Counter Helix punishes them for it and Culling Blade finishes low-health targets. You jump in, you survive, your team follows.
51.5% win rate at Herald to Crusader (136.9K games) · Items & abilities
- Offlane · Pos 3Melee
Overwhelming Odds, Press The Attack and Duel give you damage, healing and a forced one-on-one. Duel is the whole plan: pick a target and win the fight.
53.1% win rate at Herald to Crusader (132K games) · Items & abilities
- Hard support · Pos 5Ranged
Frostbite roots, Crystal Nova slows and Arcane Aura gives your whole team mana. Fragile, so stay behind your team, but the job is easy to understand: cast, then keep everyone supplied.
52.9% win rate at Herald to Crusader (132.2K games) · Items & abilities
- Hard support · Pos 5Ranged
Frost Blast and Chain Frost deal area damage, Frost Shield protects an ally and Sinister Gaze locks an enemy down. A ranged support that is simple to use and good at fighting.
52.7% win rate at Herald to Crusader (79.7K games) · Items & abilities
- Soft support · Pos 4Melee
Tanky for a support, with Fireblast as a quick stun, Ignite to chase and Bloodlust to speed up an ally. Lots of health and few ways to fail.
51.5% win rate at Herald to Crusader (162.2K games) · Items & abilities
- Soft or hard support · Pos 4/5Ranged
Paralyzing Cask stuns and bounces, Voodoo Restoration heals the team and Death Ward wins fights when your team protects it. A support that lets you help and deal damage.
52.8% win rate at Herald to Crusader (148.1K games) · Items & abilities
Want a mid hero? The middle lane is the hardest for a new player because you play alone. If you want to try it anyway, Dragon Knight (above), Necrophos and Lina are the easiest starts.
One thing to keep in mind: easy heroes tend to lose win rate as the ranks climb, because better players punish simple plans. Bristleback is a good example: 50.8% at Herald to Crusader, 45.3% at Divine+. That is fine for learning, and a sign to move on to harder heroes later.
Heroes to avoid at first
Valve gives 13 heroes the highest complexity rating. They are not bad heroes; they ask for a lot: several units, many spells to combine, or deep knowledge of the game. Leave them for later:
Arc Warden, Brewmaster, Chen, Earth Spirit, Invoker, Io, Kez, Lone Druid, Meepo, Morphling, Oracle, Rubick and Visage.
Invoker has ten spells built from three orbs, Meepo controls several copies of himself and Chen commands a team of creeps. The tier list shows them high or low depending on skill, not on how easy they are. Read how to read the tier list before trusting a number.
How to get better with your first heroes
- Stick to two or three heroes. Repetition teaches you more than variety. Aim for around 20 games on a hero before you judge it.
- Learn one role first. Read positions and roles explained and pick the position that fits your hero.
- Use the hero’s build page. Every hero page lists the most-bought items by phase with their win rates, and Dota 2 items for beginners explains the ones you will see most.
- Last-hit and deny. Killing your own creeps at low health denies gold and experience. It is the skill that separates ranks the most; learn how it works.
- Watch the minimap. Glance at it every few seconds. Most deaths for new players are ganks they could have seen coming.
- Check the meta once in a while. The tier list and the patch notes show which heroes got stronger or weaker.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the easiest hero in Dota 2?
- There is no single easiest hero, but Wraith King, Crystal Maiden, Axe, Juggernaut and Sven are among the most forgiving. They have simple abilities and survive mistakes. Pick the one that matches the role you want to play.
- Should a beginner play support?
- Support is a good start: you do not need to farm perfectly and the goal is simple, help your team fight. The trade-off is that you will not get much gold. Try one easy support and one easy carry to see which role you enjoy more.
- Do beginner heroes stay good at higher ranks?
- Some do, many do not. Simple heroes win a lot at low ranks because the opposition makes more mistakes. As players improve, they punish simple plans, and heroes with more depth start to win more. Use easy heroes to learn the game, then widen your pool.
- How many heroes should a new player learn?
- Two or three is plenty at the start, ideally in the same role. Once you feel comfortable, add a hero from another role so you understand what your teammates are doing.
